Ornithology: What is THAT?!

We live in a beautiful area that is habitat to many different kinds of birds. We’ll be exploring birds native to Saratoga Springs and building homes for them as we study ornithology—the branch of zoology that concerns the study of birds! Come ready to explore, observe, ask questions, and document as you research to identify our natural flying wildlife.

Tuesday, February 6th OR Thursday, February 8th

Snowflakes and Westminster Abbey

Snowflakes and Westminster Abbey...what do they have in common? Geometry! Art meets math in our class about paintings, designs, and beauty around the world. We’ll study Italian, Indian, Islamic, and American cultural art that revolves around geometry and variety of design. We’ll learn about the “principle of 6,” expanding patterns, and create beautiful snowflakes with what we’ve learned! Don’t miss this STEAM winter wonderland.

Tuesday, February 13th OR Thursday, February 15th

4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Map & Blueprint a Secret Lab

“Does this look familiar? How are the shapes related here? What is similar and different between a blueprint and a building?” We’ll answer these questions as more as we work our way through a mapping class about architectural blueprints. Blending math and art, we will measure, identify, classify, sketch, and diagram our way through a study of incredible buildings and then blueprint our own secret laboratories—where we can execute all of our ingenious master plans…

Tuesday, February 20th OR Thursday, February 22nd

4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Decryption and Encryption

Math. Computers. Secrets. What do they all have in common? We’re going to find out! Math, technology, and history intersect as we learn about George Washington’s spy ring, decrypt written codes, make our own cyphers, and learn about computer encryption and decryption in modern life. Who knows? Our secret codes class might inspire some future NSA and CIA cryptographers!

Tuesday, February 27th OR Thursday, March 1st

4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Are Bugs our Future Burgers?

Can you identify most bugs? Can you tell the difference between a mite and a mosquito, a flea and a fly? Do you know that most food conservationists predict bugs (yes, bugs) will dominate the meat market someday? Come find out more about world food supplies and make some “bug” treats! You’ll go home as top-notch entomologists and entomophagists after this insect STEAM class.
